In the mid 1980s, the Mason family of Hawke’s Bay began to see their family estate ‘Dartmoor’ in a new light. For more than century, the land had been successfully farmed. But the time had come for a change. Pasture made way for grapevines; winery buildings replaced farm sheds; conversations about grape varieties replaced talk of livestock.

Mentally prepared to ‘do things properly’ and excel at their new venture, brothers David and Mark Mason established Sacred Hill. The name is derived from Puketapu - which means ‘sacred hill’ in Maori - a small village close to the estate.

David Mason took on the key role of managing director. From a first pressing that yielded just 350 cases of wine David has nurtured Sacred Hill through a phenomenal growth phase with his involvement spanning all facets of the business, with an emphasis on marketing, brand management and sales. The estate has enjoyed a rapid rise in profile with a special focus on producing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

The picturesque estate winery, set amidst stands of native and exotic trees, has become a popular tourist destination. Domestic and international travellers come to enjoy the breathtaking views over Dartmoor Valley, while they experience the estate’s distinctive wines.
