Wine Regions
Hawke's Bay
Located on the eastern seaboard of New Zealand's North Island, Hawke’s Bay is one of the hottest and sunniest areas in the country. Sheltering inland ranges, Hawke’s Bay’s warm maritime climate provides a long growing season, low rainfall, and high sunshine hours.
With more than 25 soil types, from clay loam to limestone to sands and gravel, the region offers a tremendous diversity for wine styles. Add to that a choice of sites from coastal to inland foothills, altitudes from virtually sea level to several hundred metres and Hawke's Bay is a region with limitless grape growing opportunities.
Marlborough
Marlborough is New Zealand's largest and best known winegrowing area. Marlborough's Sauvignon Blanc has taken the world by storm with its distinctive aromas and zesty fruit flavours. Worldwide interest in Marlborough wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc has fuelled an incredible boom in vineyard development in the region.
The free-draining, alluvial loams over gravelly subsoil's in the region's two main river valleys, the Wairau and Awatere, provide ideal growing conditions. Long hot days followed by cool nights and a long growing season helps build and maintain the vibrant fruit flavours for which Marlborough is now famous.
Central Otago
At 45º south Central Otago is the world’s southernmost winemaking region. It is mountainous, rising to over 2000m with the vines planted amongst spectacular alpine scenery. The vineyards are also the highest in New Zealand, located between 200 and 400 metres above see level.
Central Otago is a rapidly developing wine growing region, with an international reputation for some of the best 'New World' Pinot Noir in the world. More than 70% of grapes grown in Central Otago are Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and to a lesser extent Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer.
