Deerstalkers Gimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay
Deerstalkers Vineyard was established as a premium vineyard planted mostly in merlot; it also contains smaller areas of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc, and syrah. Planting density within this vineyard is high due to the limited vigour of the river gravels. This means that the naturally low yielding vines will produce fruit of intense flavour with good colour and ripeness.
The Gimblett Gravels region has proven ideally suited for growing premium Bordeaux varietals and has recently been receiving rave reviews with regard to the up and coming variety of syrah.
All our Special Selection red wines Helmsman, Brokenstone and Deerstalkers are sourced from carefully managed blocks within this vineyard.
The old river gravels on which this vineyard is planted means warm soil temperatures encourage early ripeness, limited soil moisture enables good control of vine growth, and rainfall events during ripening are mitigated by the free draining nature of these gravels.
