Gimblett Gravels Vineyard (Hawke's Bay)

Sacred Hill has a joint venture involving two vineyards spread over 27 hectares in the acclaimed Gimblett Gravels region of Hawke’s Bay.

This region has proved ideally suited for growing ultra-premium Bordeaux varietals and has recently been receiving rave reviews with regard to the up and coming variety of syrah.

Deerstalkers Vineyard was established as an ultra-premium vineyard planted mostly in merlot; it also contains smaller areas of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc, and syrah.  Planting density within this vineyard is high due to the limited vigour provided by the river gravels. This means that the naturally low yielding vines will produce fruit of intense flavour with good colour and ripeness.

Woodlands Vineyard has been redeveloped and is now predominantly a syrah vineyard. The old river gravels on which these two vineyards are planted mean warm soil temperatures encourage early ripeness, limited soil moisture enables good control of vine growth, and rainfall events during ripening are mitigated by the free draining nature of these gravels.
