Rifleman's Hawke's Bay
The Rifleman's Vineyard is located two kilometres beyond the Dartmoor Vineyard on a spectacular site overlooking the white cliffs of the Tutaekuri River. Just over 25 hectares of the river plateau has been developed for premium Chardonnay production, 15 hectares of which is planted in 20 year old Mendoza vines where the highly awarded Rifleman's Chardonnay is sourced year after year.
The soil is a mixture of 10,000 year old volcanic ash and deep red metals overlaying limestone, resulting in very low fertility. Production at this vineyard is characterised by low yields and extremely concentrated fruit flavours.
